Among bromeliads, one of the most enjoyable groups to hybridize is Dyckia. They are not only fun to work with but also highly receptive to cross-pollination. The flowers have clearly separated male and female parts, and Dyckia naturally tends to outcross. This gives growers flexibility: you can pollinate blooms that are already open, or even those that are just about to open the next day.
The method is straightforward. Using a small pair of tweezers, carefully move aside the petals and the inner stamens attached to them to expose the female stigma of the mother flower. Be careful not to let the pollen scatter. Then, collect pollen from the father plant and gently apply it onto the stigma of the mother flower. Before applying, lightly separate the stigma into three lobes with the tip of the tweezers.
Once finished, label the cross clearly. Within about a week, the ovary will begin to swell, forming a seed capsule that contains dozens of seedsready for the next generation of Dyckia hybrids.
Give it a try, and youll see just how easy and exciting Dyckia pollination can be!
